How to Wear Your Karate Outfit For Best Representation of Your School

In the martial arts, the students routinely wear a karate outfit. This outfit, most commonly referred to as a Karate Gi, is made of durable material that is loose fitting for unrestricted movement. They usually look oversized when first putting them on, but the looseness makes it possible to move freely and respond to attacks quickly.

The karate outfit is not just something to wear while practicing, it is also a representation of your school and discipline. Through wearing your outfit you can display your school name, your badges, or simply carry self-pride. Properly wearing your karate outfit respects the traditions of karate, and minimizes injury when practicing.

Washing and Wearing Your Karate Outfit:
The tradition of karate is one that spans centuries. There have been millions of people who have given their livelihood to the study, and the practice, to their chosen style. It doesn't matter if it is Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Shotokan, or any of the other styles, wearing your karate outfit correctly is important. Your outfit should also be clean. Washing your karate gi should be done after any practice session. This is so no stains have the opportunity to set in. Your outfit can then be air dried on a hanger. There is really no need to iron as the material is heavy enough to lay flat.

Put Your Karate Outfit on One Leg at a Time:
As with anything else, you begin the process of wearing your gi by putting on the pants first. Many pants have an elastic waistband, but there are those that have drawstrings. Tie these in a regular shoestring knot, but not too tight. The legs should also be about two inches above the ground so there isn't the possibility of tripping.

Tie The Karate Outfit Top From Right to Left:
Putting on the top of the uniform is not a simple matter of pulling it over year head. Most of the karate gi tops are tunics which have an open front. However, there are no buttons to close it up. Through the use of ties you secure the lapels. To do this correctly you must tie the right side of the tunic to the left inside tie. Then pull the left side over the right and tie it to the indicated tie string. The tie should not be tight, but loose enough so that you can move freely.

Cinch Your Belt Over Your Karate Outfit:
Once your have your pants and the top on, you can then cinch your belt. Place the middle part of your belt on your abdomen and then wrap it around on both sides. Fold the right end of the belt over the left end and then fold up through the underside of the belt. Take the left end and fold it over the right end and pull them tight to cinch the belt.

Pull Your Karate Outfit Straight:
With everything complete all you need to do now is to pull the top straight down to eliminate any wrinkles and make it as flat as possible.

Wear your karate outfit with great pride. It shows how hard you have worked, but also gives you a sense of achievement.
